-
- !PCRamDisc is a modified version of !ADFSdisc supplied with the PC
- Emulator. It will allow owners of 4meg (plus!) Archimedes (including
- A3000s, I think!) to use a RAM disc without having to sacrifice any of
- the precious 640k memoryused by MSDOS. If you do not have a hard disc,
- it will be configured as PC drive "C". If you do have a hard disc, it
- can be configured as drive "D". To do this you will need to modify the
- file !Run2 in the !PC directory. For my system, which is sadly deficient
- in the hard disc department, !Run2 reads as follows:
-
- /<PCe$Dir>.!RunImage <PCe$Dir>.ROM RAM:$.RamDisc
-
- It is also vital that the PCemulator does not try to quit the desktop or
- kill the RAMFS and filer modules, so if you are having problems, check
- the !Configand !Modules files in the directory $.!PC.GenBoot.
-
- The application also uses the MemAlloc module to minimise memory wastage
- on screen, font and spritesize, and is currently set to allocate just
- over 2Mbytes of memory to the RAMFS (it needs slightly more than 2Mbytes
- as the "partition" is actually a dummy file called "RamDisc" in the
- root directory of the RAMFS).
-
- To use the apllication, simply put it on your PC Emulator disc in the
- root directory, and "double-click" on its icon. Full screen
- instructions are givenin the program, but in case you forget to read
- them (!), once you have bootedyour MSDOS disc, type FDISK at the A>
- prompt, then answer "1" and "Y" to the questions you are asked. You will
- then be asked to reboot the MSDOS disc. Having done that, you must
- format your RAM hard disc (if you have a hard discalready, DON'T get the
- two mixed up or you'll lose all your data!) by typing FORMAT C: (or
- FORMAT D: if you're using the RAM disc as drive "D").
-
- Well done! You've now got a 2Mbyte RAM disc to use, and if you start
- from an empty desktop, you'll still have over 600k of available memory
- in MSDOS to play with.
